It is well-documented that Lt. Moulton died on March 27, 1814 during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Major General Andrew Jackson chose the name Moulton in the officer's honor.

This causes some confusion. If your grandfather's discharge papers were signed May 10, 1814, how is it possible that "Michl Molton" signed them? Or is it plausible Joseph Williams signed both names on behalf of the deceased? The latter explanation would account for the misspellings.

Incidentally, I can find no information explaining why Moulton, Alabama was named for Moulton. Even the citizens of that town seemed puzzled by it. He didn't have any connection to the area aside from that lone battle. By any chance, have you come across an explanation?

Peter Moulton
Skowhegan, MaineAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17019301858414982582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839551061657279980.post-78496164241286163942015-11-17T12:11:20.508-08:002015-11-17T12:11:20.508-08:00And I thoight waiting for a W was bad! :) I wish m...And I thoight waiting for a W was bad! :) I wish mine would've mentuined his wife.
